Paul Reis (Beau Bridges) takes a job as the new gym teacher at a Catholic boys' boarding school, wanting only a quiet place to start his career. He walks straight into a bitter feud between two older instructors, Jerome Malley (James Mason) and Joseph Dobbs (Robert Preston), and the school turns out to be less tranquil than its stone halls suggest. Sidney Lumet leaves Paul no neutral ground, and the longer he stays, the more he has to lose.
