You get tough. You get tender. You get close to each other. Maybe you even get close to the truth.

Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is a private detective in 1930s Los Angeles who photographs infidelity for divorcing couples, until a routine case pulls him into murder and conspiracy. A woman claiming to be Mrs. Mulwray hires him to tail her husband, but the real Evelyn Cross Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) arrives asking why. What begins as deception unravels into water theft and corruption, drawing Jake closer to Evelyn even as the truth becomes more dangerous.
