Chinatown

Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is a private eye in sunbaked, pre-war Southern California who makes his living photographing other people's affairs. A woman hires him to follow her husband, and the job pulls him into a tangle of water rights, money and lies that reaches well past one marriage. Roman Polanski keeps Jake close to Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway), and the more he learns, the less he can say he knows about her.
