John (Jeremy Irons) is a British journalist in Hong Kong who wants to get one last story down before the colony changes hands. His year runs from New Year's Day to June 30th, 1997, with Vivian (Gong Li) and Jean (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk) among the people he meets along the way. Wayne Wang sets these private lives against the handover and treats a city's ending as a loss each person has to carry alone.
