Christ Stopped at Eboli

Carlo Levi (Gian Maria Volonté) is a painter trained as a doctor, and in 1935 Fascist Italy he wants only to get through his sentence of exile and return to his life. He is sent to a remote village in the Basilicata region, near Eboli, where the peasants keep their distance and ask him to treat their sick. Francesco Rosi adapts Levi's own book and keeps the pace slow, with Volonté in his city clothes among the people of the village.
