“How do you kill something that can't possibly be alive?”

Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon), a bullied high schooler, spots a rusted 1958 Plymouth Fury and has to own it, then spends his days restoring it. John Carpenter follows what the work does to him, as the car comes back to life and Arnie turns confident and cold, shutting out Leigh (Alexandra Paul) and his friend Dennis (John Stockwell). It is about a boy who gives himself to the thing that finally makes him feel like somebody.
