Abigail Martin (Deanna Durbin) marries Robert Manette (Gene Kelly), a charming Southern aristocrat, and learns too late that he has inherited his family's streak of violence and instability. After his arrest, she runs from his relatives, takes the name Jackie Lamont, and finds work as a singer in a New Orleans dive. Robert Siodmak follows her through the rain-soaked aftermath of a marriage that has collapsed, and she carries all of it into every song she sings.
