Lord Naganori Asano (Yūzō Kayama) is tricked into committing ritual suicide, and his domain is dissolved overnight, leaving forty-seven samurai without a master. Chamberlain Kuranosuke Oishi (Matsumoto Hakuō I) must keep his men patient and hidden while they wait for a chance to avenge him. Hiroshi Inagaki gives Oishi the long part of waiting, a retainer carrying the weight of a whole household and the oath behind it.
