In 1950s Ireland, three girlhood friends leave their small town for college in Dublin, Benny Hogan (Minnie Driver) among them, a self-conscious dreamer with a lot of feeling and little confidence. Pat O'Connor follows Benny, Eve (Geraldine O'Rawe) and Nan (Saffron Burrows) through first loves and first betrayals, with the campus's best-looking boy, Jack Foley (Chris O'Donnell), drawing every eye. Benny watches him from the edge of the crowd, her friends beside her.
