Peggy Nash (Ann Sheridan) breaks off her engagement to Danny Kenny (James Cagney) because she wants more than the poor New York streets they both came up on. Danny answers by training to become a championship boxer, while Peggy takes up dancing with a partner who is sleazy and sure of himself. Anatole Litvak follows the pair through the years of work and ambition that keep them apart, though neither has quite let go of the other.
