“He was a man who couldn't care less... until he met a man who couldn't care more.”

Max Lowe (Patrick Swayze) is a Houston surgeon worn down by American medicine, and when a patient dies on his operating table, he leaves for India to find himself. In Calcutta he is attacked by thugs and left without money or a passport, and he ends up in a slum alongside Hazari Pal (Om Puri), a rickshaw puller, and the Pal family. Roland Joffé's film is about a stranger who arrives with nothing and is taken in anyway.
