“What Happened to Them Could Happen to You... In Any City Anywhere!”

Dr. Frank Whitman (Barry Newman) wants to get his patients out of a hospital with a fire coming for it, and Mayor William Dudley (Leslie Nielsen) wants the city to stay calm. Alvin Rakoff starts from an ex-employee's sabotage at the oil refinery, then follows people who either fight the blaze or run from it. The last thing the film leaves us with is Whitman and Nurse Andrea Harper (Shelley Winters) at work among the fires.
