At a Florida resort hotel in 1967, Scott Hayward (Elvis Presley), heir to an oil fortune, swaps places with Tom Wilson (Will Hutchins), a water-ski instructor. Arthur H. Nadel sets Scott among the sunbathers and speedboats, with Dianne Carter (Shelley Fabares) and the rival Jamison (Bill Bixby) close by. Scott wants to be liked for who he is, and his father's money is what he is trying to leave behind.
