“The good news is Jonathan's having his first affair. The bad news is she's his roommate's mother.”

Jonathan (Andrew McCarthy) arrives at a prep school as a naive Midwestern kid and is taken in by his worldlier roommate, Skip (Rob Lowe). Following Skip's advice, he goes into Chicago's cocktail lounges and meets Ellen (Jacqueline Bisset), an older woman who has no idea how closely her life touches his. Lewis John Carlino sets all of it against the dormitory and the nearby city lounges, with a cheating scandal spreading through the school.
