Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) is an analyst, not a field man, but he becomes acting Deputy Director of Intelligence at the CIA when Admiral Greer is diagnosed with cancer. Then a friend of the president is murdered on his yacht, and Ryan traces the dead man back to drug dealers while John Clark (Willem Dafoe) is sent into Colombia. Phillip Noyce builds the film on the idea that a government can lie to its own people and still call it duty.
