Dan (Jude Law) wants to be a photographer, but his life fractures when Alice (Natalie Portman) steps into traffic while looking at him. In the aftermath, he meets Anna (Julia Roberts), a portraitist, and begins an affair that pulls in Larry (Clive Owen), a dermatologist married to Anna. The four orbit each other through London, trading intimacies and betrayals, each confession opening new wounds that may never close.
