Loretta Lynn (Sissy Spacek) grows up poor in a Kentucky coal town and wants a life bigger than the one waiting for her. At fifteen she marries Mooney Lynn (Tommy Lee Jones), a man who hears her sing and starts pushing her toward a stage. Michael Apted follows her from that hardscrabble start into country music's biggest rooms, where the singer has to carry the girl she was.
