“Before she was France's famous mademoiselle…”

By day Gabrielle (Audrey Tautou) sews costumes for the performers in a provincial bar, and by night she sings there with her sister Adrienne (Marie Gillain), which is how she comes to be called Coco. A liaison with the Baron Étienne Balsan (Benoît Poelvoorde) brings her into French society, where her gift for design starts to show. Anne Fontaine keeps one question open: how long a seamstress with no money or family can stay among people who could send her back.
