Dr. Susan Wheeler (Geneviève Bujold) wants an answer to a question her hospital would rather drop: why do healthy patients keep falling into comas after routine surgery? Her colleague Dr. Mark Bellows (Michael Douglas) and her superiors tell her to leave it alone, and she keeps asking. Michael Crichton, who also wrote the script, treats her search as a case file she works through one chart at a time.
