Conflagration

Goichi Mizoguchi (Raizō Ichikawa), a stuttering acolyte, is sent to study at the Temple of the Golden Pavilion. There he hears that his family has fallen apart, and he has to bear it in silence, with his mother Aki (Tanie Kitabayashi) far away and Tayama Dosen (Ganjirō Nakamura II) presiding over the temple. Kon Ichikawa, adapting Yukio Mishima's novel, keeps the camera close on Goichi's face while the pressure builds behind it.
