Conrack

“One beautiful man. His story is true.”

Pat Conroy (Jon Voight) is a young white teacher sent to Yamacraw Island, a fishing community off the coast of South Carolina where most of the families are poor and black. He finds the children nearly illiterate, with almost no sense of the world beyond their island. Martin Ritt keeps the story small and close, and the bond that forms between Conroy and his students is what the film stays with.
