Captain Andersen (Conrad Veidt) is a Danish ship's master held up in a British port in the early months of the war, with a cargo to deliver and no say in when he sails. Michael Powell sends him into the middle of a German spy ring, and the only person who can help is Mrs. Sorensen (Valerie Hobson), a stranger with her own reasons for being there. Veidt and Hobson, last paired in The Spy in Black, work out whether they can trust each other.
