Cops and Robbers

(1951)Directed by Mario Monicelli, Steno105 minComedy

Ferdinando Esposito (Totò) is a Roman petty thief who lives off tourists, talking his way into their pockets one gullible visitor at a time. Brigadiere Bottoni (Aldo Fabrizi) catches him and then keeps after him, until Esposito slips away and Bottoni's superiors give him a plain warning. Steno and Mario Monicelli set the chase between two men with families to feed, and if Bottoni fails to bring Esposito in, he loses his job.
