“One's the toughest cop on the force. The other just wants to get some action. Together, they're in a disaster!”

A mob hitman has moved in next door to the Robbersons, and the police want his house watched from theirs. Hard-nosed detective Jake Stone (Jack Palance) and his young partner Tony Moore take over the family's living space, where Norman Robberson (Chevy Chase) decides he can help. Michael Ritchie sets this stubborn, gruff cop against Norman and his wife Helen (Dianne Wiest), who keep offering assistance he never asked for.
