“They needed a family. What they got was magic.”

Corrina Washington (Whoopi Goldberg) needs work in 1950s Los Angeles, and a widowed jingle writer named Manny Singer (Ray Liotta) needs someone to mind his daughter. Molly (Tina Majorino) hasn't spoken since her mother died, and Corrina starts with small, patient things: a game, a snack, a way of sitting beside her. Jessie Nelson's first film is mostly about Corrina, a woman new to this house who is giving the family more than the job asks of her.
