On Christmas Eve 1877, Empress Elisabeth (Vicky Krieps) turns 40 and is declared an old woman by the court that once adored her face. She answers with tight lacing, strict diets and a public image she rebuilds one appearance at a time. Marie Kreutzer follows her through the year as the corset pulls tighter, and Elisabeth keeps standing straight inside it.
