Coup de Grâce
Sophie de Reval (Margarethe von Trotta), a countess in the Baltic region in 1919, loves Erich von Lhomond (Matthias Habich), the Prussian officer who is her brother Conrad's friend. Volker Schlöndorff adapts Marguerite Yourcenar's novel and sets her longing against the fighting that surrounds the family's estate. Her love goes unanswered, and the film treats that unanswered love as a feeling that can harden into cruelty.
