Dr. Stephen Sorenson (Dana Andrews) is racing to fire a thermonuclear device deep into the Earth, hoping to tap the heat of the magma below. Andrew Marton stages the project as a rush of drilling crews, warnings and urgent calls, with Sir Charles Eggerston (Alexander Knox) among those watching. Sorenson, a sick man with little time left, will not slow down, and nobody can talk him out of it.
