In Toronto, film producer James Ballard (James Spader) and his wife Catherine (Deborah Kara Unger) lead a cool, sleek life of affairs they talk over in bed. After a head-on collision kills a man and leaves Helen Remington (Holly Hunter) beside him, James is drawn to Vaughan (Elias Koteas), who stages and studies car wrecks. Cronenberg's film treats desire as a feeling the body only discovers through damage.
