Over dinner, Emily (Julianne Moore) tells her husband Cal (Steve Carell) she's been unfaithful and wants a divorce, and he steps out of the marriage with the house and the kids still waiting for him. Alone and over 40 in the dating world, he gets taken in by Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), a self-styled player with a lesson plan for him. Directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa follow the wreckage of the Weaver house, a big, clean place with children's rooms and a lawn.
