“Faith evolves.”

Charles Darwin (Paul Bettany) sits down to write On the Origin of Species and cannot get past the first pages. His wife Emma (Jennifer Connelly) is devout, and he is torn between her faith and what his own research has shown him. Annie Darwin (Martha West), their eldest daughter, keeps appearing in his memory, and Jon Amiel shapes the film around that pull between the book on his desk and the child he has lost.
