Ana (Ana Torrent) is eight years old and living in a Madrid house with her sisters Irene (Conchita Pérez) and Maite (Mayte Sánchez), mourning a mother she keeps seeing in the rooms around her. María (Geraldine Chaplin) appears as that mother, though no one else in the family seems to see her. Carlos Saura frames Ana's face in long, level stillness, her wide dark eyes fixed on the grown-ups moving past her.
