Cries and Whispers

“Four women dressed in white in a mansion painted red... haunted by whispers and cries.”

Agnes (Harriet Andersson) is dying of cancer in a mansion at the end of the 19th century, and the two sisters who have come to sit with her cannot reach her. Maria (Liv Ullmann) and Karin (Ingrid Thulin) are so shut inside their own private hurts that they barely reach each other either. Only Anna (Kari Sylwan), the servant, stays close to Agnes, and Bergman keeps her at the bedside while the others hold back.
