In the family home in Mississippi, three sisters come back together after the youngest, Babe (Sissy Spacek), is arrested for shooting her husband. Lenny (Diane Keaton) and Meg (Jessica Lange) arrive carrying their own old troubles, and Bruce Beresford keeps them all in one house with the memory of their mother's suicide. Babe is facing charges, and the sisters have to settle what they owe one another before any of it can be put right.
