A murder in Boston, brutal and carefully staged, and then a second one that looks exactly like it, right after a jury has freed the man accused of the first. Ben Chase (Gary Oldman), the attorney who won that acquittal, begins to doubt his client, Martin Thiel (Kevin Bacon), and takes the case in order to build one against him. Martin Campbell frames the city in cold, shadowed interiors and keeps the camera close on Chase's face as the doubt sets in.
