“Danger runs deep.”

Russian ultranationalists threaten to launch nuclear missiles at the United States and Japan, and the USS Alabama is sent out to be ready to answer. Captain Frank Ramsey (Gene Hackman) brings aboard a green but highly recommended executive officer, Lt. Cmdr. Ron Hunter (Denzel Washington), and Tony Scott keeps the two men trading orders inside the hull. Hunter is the one who has to decide whether following his captain is the same as doing his job.
