Crossfire

(1947)Directed by Edward Dmytryk86 minCrime, Mystery
“Hate is like a loaded gun!”

Detective Finlay (Robert Young) wants to know who beat a man to death, and the only leads are a handful of soldiers just out of the army, among them Peter Keeley (Robert Mitchum) and Montgomery (Robert Ryan). Edward Dmytryk keeps the case in rain-slick streets and bare interview rooms, where every statement gets checked against the next one. Finlay questions each man in turn, and the longer it goes, the less he can tell who is lying.
