“Unspeakable secrets are hidden within the Forbidden City.”

In the Tang dynasty, Empress Phoenix (Gong Li) has been given a medicine to take at set hours, and no one in the palace will say what it is for. Emperor Ping (Chow Yun-Fat) rules his family as completely as his lands, and Zhang Yimou fills the court with gold, lacquer and ranks of attendants. Between husband and wife sits a marriage built on duty, long habit and a great deal of silence.
