Cutting It Short

Maryška (Magda Vášáryová) has long blonde hair the whole town admires, a taste for meat and beer, and a husband, the brewery manager Francin (Jiří Schmitzer), who lives like an ascetic. The brewery board arrives to audit his careful accounts, and she answers with a pig-killing feast, working alongside the butcher. Jiří Menzel sets it all in a Czech small town, while Francin waits on a permanent contract and his noisy brother Pepin settles in with no plan to leave.
