Washington in the 1950s belongs to the Senators, a baseball team that loses year after year and a fan named Joe Boyd who cannot stop watching them. Mr. Applegate (Ray Walston) offers him a deal: he can become the young slugger Joe Hardy (Tab Hunter) and win the pennant, in exchange for his soul. George Abbott and Stanley Donen stage it like the Broadway show it came from, with Gwen Verdon reprising Lola and the dances filling the screen.
