“Heartbreak Behind Gayety of a Girly-Girl Show!”

In 1940, a struggling dance troupe holds together on little money, and Judy (Maureen O'Hara) is its one serious ballerina. Dorothy Arzner follows her after the company folds, when Bubbles (Lucille Ball), the brash dancer who left for burlesque, hires her as a stooge. Judy stands in the wings of the club in her toe shoes, waiting for her cue to walk out.
