Dancer in the Dark

“In a world of shadows, she found the light of life.”

Selma Jezkova (Björk), a Czech immigrant working a factory press, is going blind, and she is hiding it. Every spare coin goes toward an operation that would spare her young son the same fate. When the machines clatter around her, she drifts into musical numbers built from their rhythms, and Lars von Trier shoots the factory with a handheld, jolting camera while the song sequences play in smoother, brighter takes.
