Kate Mundy (Meryl Streep) and her four unmarried sisters share one small house in rural Ireland in the 1930s, getting by on little and making the most of it. Pat O'Connor keeps the camera inside their kitchen and out in the fields around it, where Chrissy (Catherine McCormack), Agnes, Maggie and Rose go about their days. Kate holds the household together by sheer stubborn effort, and she cannot say how much of herself that has cost.
