In May 1940, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) becomes Prime Minister just as the war is turning against Britain, with Viscount Halifax (Stephen Dillane) and Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup) pressing him to open talks with Hitler. Joe Wright puts him in the war cabinet rooms and at his typewriter, where Elizabeth Layton (Lily James) takes his dictation. If he fights on and loses, the empire goes with him.
