Das Boot

“On land they dreamed of being heroes. Beneath the sea they pray to be survivors.”

A German U-boat slips out into the Battle of the Atlantic to hunt allied ships, and before long the boat is the one being hunted. Wolfgang Petersen packs the crew of U-96 into a cramped steel hull and gives equal time to the fighting and to the long, empty stretches between. Leutnant Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer) watches the captain, Der Alte (Jürgen Prochnow), whom the young men depend on to bring them home.
