Daughter of the Nile

Lin Hsiao-yang (Yang Lin) wants to hold her family together, and she does it on a waitress's wages at a Kentucky Fried Chicken, with night school squeezed in after her shifts. There is no mother in the house and her father is working out of town, so the care of her younger siblings falls to her. Hou Hsiao-hsien watches her cross the city from job to class to home while her brother Hsiao-fang (Jack Kao) slides toward crime, and she keeps going.
