Daybreak

A shot is fired behind a closed door, and a man in a rooming-house apartment will not come out. François (Jean Gabin) bolts himself in, and as the night wears on he goes back over the weeks that led to the killing. Marcel Carné fills those memories with two women, Françoise (Jacqueline Laurent) and Clara (Arletty), and the pull between François and each of them.
