Rigby Reardon (Steve Martin) is a Los Angeles private eye in the old hard-boiled mold, and he gets by on a trench coat and a flat, serious voice. Juliet Forrest (Rachel Ward) hires him after her father, a cheese scientist guarding a secret recipe, dies in a mountain car crash she won't believe was an accident. Carl Reiner cuts Martin into clips of Alan Ladd and Barbara Stanwyck, and the case has Reardon chasing a list called The Friends and Enemies of Carlotta.
