Death by Hanging

A Korean man known only as R (Yun Yun-Do) is hanged in a Japanese prison in 1968 and is still alive when the doctors check. The prison officials, among them the warden (Kei Satō) and the Education Officer (Fumio Watanabe), cannot hang him twice, and they cannot let him go. Nagisa Ōshima stages their argument in the execution chamber, where R stands in his white shirt, the noose now loose around his neck.
