In 1946 New York, pianist Christine Radcliffe (Bette Davis) is reunited with Karel Novak (Paul Henreid), the cellist she loved before the war, and the two marry. Her new life grows complicated when Alexander Hollenius (Claude Rains), a wealthy composer, becomes fixated on her. Irving Rapper, working again with Davis, Henreid and Rains, stages the story as a drama of heightened feeling.
