“What did happen on the Cahulawassee River?”

Ed Gentry (Jon Voight) is an Atlanta businessman who goes along when his friend Lewis Medlock (Burt Reynolds), an outdoor fanatic, wants one last run down the Cahulawassee River before it is dammed into a lake. John Boorman puts four men from the city into canoes and sends them into the north Georgia back-country. Ed and Lewis, the cautious one and the confident one, find out how little the trip has to do with the river.
